A Brief Query to "Dr. Sid"

Tony Hammer, M.D.

Many Web sites exaggerate what chiropractors can do. The box below is excerpted from the home page of a Canadian chiropractor who claims that "everyone on earth should be under regular chiropractic care." It also notes that Dr. Sid Williams, founder and president of Life University (the largest chiropractic school in the United States), has said that "Chiropractic should be universally utilized as a major tool for disease prevention, extending longevity, improving the health of children, of working adults, of athletes, and of aging people alike."

Who needs Chiropractic?

It is our vision and mission for everyone on earth to be under regular Chiropractic care. As Chiropractors, we do not heal or treat specific diseases. We locate subluxations, provide adjustments to the spine to relieve nerve pressure, and this in turn makes the body a more effective self-healing organism. It does not matter what the medical diagnosis is. We, as Chiropractors, seek to improve health regardless of the patients' condition. This is what makes our profession separate and distinct. Because we are not limited by a diagnosis of illness, we can help people change their lives by enhancing their health.

This is our message to the world: when structural problems are corrected and the spine is then properly maintained, the quality of health for nearly everyone in the world can be improved.

So who needs Chiropractic? In the words of Dr. Sid Williams, founder and president of Life University, "Chiropractic should be universally utilized as a major tool for disease prevention, extending longevity, improving the health of childern, of working adults, of athletes, and of aging people alike." It's all about improving the quality of life, expanding your vision for your life through greater possibilities and empowering you to take responsibility for your health and your life.

Therefore, in our office, you will see newborns, toddlers, world-class athletes, seniors, students, moms, and dads -- people of all ages and shapes and sizes all with one common goal: "increasing life expression and potential." Without interference, the body will heal itself naturally, without drugs and without surgery.

Anyone who has experienced any of the following
symptoms of spinal nerve interference
needs to consult a Chiropractor:

  • Headaches

Just like any piece of finely tuned machinery needs tune-ups, so too does every human body need regular Chiropractic check-ups to ensure that the nervous system can control everything optimally.

Everyone can benefit from Chiropractic Care.
Help us let everyone know about it!

Sid Williams's textbook, Dynamic Essentials of the Chiropractic Principle, Practice and Procedure, tells chiropractors how to deal with virtually every objection patients might have to coming once a month for life. Inspired by all of this, I decided to have some fun and sent the following e-mail query to "Dr. Sid."

    Subject: Help Please!

Dear Dr. Sid (Sir!),

I wonder if you could help me in a dispute with my insurance company. They offer discounts for people who look after their health by not smoking but not others who really take care of their spines with chiropractic.

I've been following your advice for a couple of years now (there is lots of useful information on Life University web site) and there is no doubt in my mind that Spinal Hygiene keeps me healthy and will mean that I live longer. So why don't the insurance companies give us a break on our insurance? I've spoken to a man at my insurance carrier (New York Life) but he tells me that there is no scientific evidence that chiropractic helps. Is there anything you know about that I could send him? We all know about the benefits of chiropracty, they're obvious and we see them all around us. Why should they make money out of all this?

Any help would be a Godsend to me.

Best wishes and keep up the good work!

Tony

A few days later, I received this reply:

Dear Mr. Hammer:

This is in response to your e-mail addressed to Dr. Sid who is not on campus at this time due to our Christmas Break period. I referred your letter to our Director of Research, Dr. Cliff Smith, who states that there is no peer-reviewed scientific research acceptable to an insurance company that supports chiropractic as adding to the longevity of life or a lower incidence of disease across a life span. He also stated that the benefits of practicing spinal hygiene as outlined on our webpage will be approximately equal to the benefits of any moderate exercise program, and that benefit would have already been factored into your insurance rate.

I trust this information will prove helpful to you.

Sincerely,

Eva E. Yeomans
Secretary
