What Conditions Do Chiropractors Treat?
The Lehigh Valley Chiropractic Society published this ad in 1971 in the
a newspaper in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The ad claims:
- There are very few diseases . . . which are not treatable by Chiropractic
methods.
- When a person gets sick, although it may be the stomach, intestines,
liver, gall bladder, kidneys, heart, lungs, or any other part of the body,
it is most likley that the first cause is mechanical displacement of segments
of the spinnal column.
- The chief cause of gastritis, constipation, diabetes, etc., are "displaced
spinal vertebrae interfering with normal nerve function."
In the 1960s and 1970s, ads as blatant as this were commonplace throughout
Pennsylvania (and probably throughout the United States). In Allentown,
many protests persuaded the newspaper's executive editor to ask several
experts he trusted to evaluate ads that his paper had published. After receiving
a very unfavorable report, he set up a policy that resulted in no more chiropractic
ads for about ten years.
